Enough Rope by Christ Knight prompts
This song was suggested to me by one of my closest friends. I don't know how I had not heard it until then, but I love it. My sweet dad came to mind when I listened to the song. So, I wrote a short blog post about him. You can read it here.
I also wanted to answer the prompt questions to serve as an example for those struggling with the comparison.
You do not have to answer all of the prompt questions I provided. Some may not apply to you. Or the song may have an entirely different meaning to you. Just share your thoughts.
Prompt one: Do you feel like you have a regret holding you back?
Yes and no! I lived with regret for years. I regretted not completing my bachelor's degree. I regretted not going after the job that I truly wanted. I regretted not having the confidence to be the person I wanted. I was at home in regret. It was a comfortable and normal feeling that consumed many of my thoughts.
Over the last few years, I have worked diligently to overcome my regrets. I am mindful to not allow fear to hinder my efforts. I would rather try and fail than not try at all.
Prompt Two: You can't go back and change the past, but what can you do to change your future?
Shew, I could write an entire book about this question. To paraphrase for now, I decided to focus on self-care, self-improvement, and self-love. I reevaluated my life and decided what I wanted to accomplish and WHY. My why at the time was my son, which is what kept me focused on the goals I had for myself. The first big goal I set for myself was to complete college. For me walking across the stage and receiving my college diploma was one of the highlights of my life. That was the win I needed to keep moving forward.
A blog post diving into your "why" and how to use it as a motivator to keep moving forward will be posted later.
Prompt Three: Do you feel like you do not have a choice in your life?
Yes and no! I did feel that way because I was depressed. I felt like I had no control over my life or the outcome. That I had to settle for whatever happened.
I no longer feel that way! In fact, I now try to overly control every situation. So, I went from one side to the other. I am working on finding a safe middle ground between the two.
Prompt Four: Do you feel like you are just going through the motions instead of living?
No, I do not feel that way. I am very much in control of my life. That wasn't always the case. So, do not get disheartened. I allowed others to dictate my path, and I followed behind them.
Prompt Five: What is one person or thing that you are thankful for today?
Specifically, today, I am thankful for my son.
Prompt Six: Why are you thankful for them?
He was my motivator to build a better life for us. I see his confidence, drive, and focus and know he will accomplish great things in his life. Changing my mindset allowed him to believe in bigger opportunities.
Last weekend Braden received 2nd place in the state Forensic competition. I couldn't be more proud of him.
Prompt Seven: What is one of your dreams?
To start writing my 2nd memoir.
Prompt Eight: What is one actionable step you can take to reach your dream?
Complete my chapter outline.
